Grading is not our invention and it is not a negotiating tactic — it is how this material is priced everywhere. Knowing which grade you are holding is the difference between being paid for it and being paid for the cheapest thing in the container.

| Soft lead | Clean, unalloyed lead — sheet, ballast and blocks. |
| Lead-lined | Lead bonded to steel, wood or board. Priced on recoverable lead, not gross weight. |
| Sheathing | Cable lead, usually carrying some contamination from the run it came off. |
| Mixed or unknown | If it is painted, plated or you are unsure what the alloy is, say so. Unknown lead gets a conservative number until it is checked. |
